The Mother: "On the Destiny of India"
An important realization no longer present in the consciousness of most people today is how the Divine manifests itself in a way that opens a channel between the Spiritual and Material planes - places where the sacred bursts into view and establishes the order of the world. This was one of the most important concerns of ancient civilizations who built their temples and holy cities on these consecrated sites, for they were known to exert a harmonious influence upon the people and the state. The holy city of Jerusalem, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, and the Great Pyramid of Giza are just a few historical examples of the soul of ancient civilizations who built their entire cultures around this sacred Axis. When their cities or temples were conquered, destroyed or became irrelevant in the face of newer, more divine manifestations, the social order dissolved into confusion and chaos, for without this sacred pillar linking the worlds of the gods and man, a harmonious existence was simply not possible. With each collapse, however, came a new manifestation, a more evolved body of spiritual knowledge and a greater understanding of the Cosmic Order. In this rise and fall of civilizations and their religions, myths, and monuments, we can see the inexorable procession of Earth’s consciousness moving toward ever higher levels of complexity, order, and Unity.
From this evolutionary perspective one cannot help but recognize the chaos and confusion that afflict us today as symptoms of an old and irrelevant order giving way to the New. Indeed, one of the most urgent problems of our time, underlying all the rest, is that our whole conception of Spirituality, indeed Reality, is based upon teachings that are over 2,000 years old.
